Educational Objectives
Upon completion of this educational activity, participants will be better able to:
- Synthesize and discuss the importance and prevalence of inpatient hyperglycemia / diabetes.
- Identify and describe current guidelines for glucose targets in the inpatient setting, the rationale for the targets, and the optimal methods to achieve the glycemic target safely in non-critical care settings.
- Identify appropriate insulin dosing and management for inpatients, and design proficient insulin regimens for patients in different situations (NPO, tube feeding, TPN, unexpected interruption of nutrition, etc.)
- Outline methods to manage transitions into the hospital, from infusion to subcutaneous insulin, and out of the hospital.
- Identify the important elements for a successful effort to improve the quality and safety of inpatient insulin management and how to ‘hard wire’ improvements into the system.
