Air Quality
Summary
This module delves into the fundamentals of air pollution, including an introduction to particulate matter, ground level ozone, and their effects on the human body such as cardiopulmonary complications and the development of malignancies. This presentation also provides a historical perspective on how concerns about air quality and its harmful impacts on human health led to the enactment of the first Clean Air Act in the United States during the 1970s.
Physicians will acquire valuable insights into the steps that can be taken to learn, educate, and advocate for their patients and communities by enhancing their understanding of the science, policies, and measures available to safeguard patient health.
Module Objectives
- Identify the different components of air pollution and how they are affected by climate change
- Identify ways in which particulate matter and ozone affect human health
- Outline the connection between climate change and oncologic risk
- Take actions that protect the health of patients through education and advocacy
