Using Data in Quality Improvement
Learning Objectives
- Explain the types of data that are used for quality improvement (QI)
- Demonstrate the critical steps in a data collection plan and why they need to be addressed in advance of project initiation
- Compare and contrast available sources of data for QI
- Identify the appropriate comparator model for a proposed intervention and evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of each model
- Create and interpret histograms, bar charts, and Pareto charts
- Create and interpret run charts, particularly in recognizing signals of special cause variation on run charts
- Recognize the different types of statistical process control (SPC) charts
- Describe how classical statistical analysis (including regression) and run or SPC chart analysis complement each other
