2017 Point-of-care Ultrasound PM

Las Vegas, NV US
May 1, 2017

Point-of-care ultrasound has become an indispensable bedside tool in the evaluation of acutely ill patients.  Portable ultrasound machines continue to become more compact and available in hospitals.  As frontline providers, hospitalists have found point-of-care ultrasound to be an essential tool in the management of their patients.  This pre-course uses a combination of high-yield didactic sessions and hands-on training to reveal an entirely new way of looking at patients through the lens of ultrasound.  The course starts with a review of the basics of ultrasound technology and then dives into its myriad applications for diagnostic purposes.  Essential maneuvers such as basic cardiac evaluation; scanning for pleural effusions, pneumothorax, and ascites; evaluation for lower extremity deep venous thrombosis; and evaluation of abdominal organs are all elucidated in an interactive atmosphere highly conducive to learning.  Participants will experience low participant-to-trainer ratios and many live models to practice imaging techniques.  The course employs cutting-edge equipment and is led by expert faculty gathered from across the country.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this educational activity, participants will be better able to:

  1. Appreciate the basics of ultrasound physics and technology and the fundamentals to operate a portable ultrasound machine (“knobology”).
  2. Differentiate between the different types of ultrasound transducers and select the correct transducer type for various point-of-care applications.
  3. Demonstrate proper techniques to perform a focused cardiac and lung ultrasound exam and recognize common thoracic pathologies by interpreting abnormal thoracic ultrasound images.
  4. Visualize the normal sonographic appearance of abdominal solid organs and vasculature of the neck and lower extremities, and interpret a series of abnormal ultrasound images to recognize gross pathologies.
