Fundamentals of Ultrasound

Module Goal

Develop a basic understanding of key concepts in ultrasound physics and ultrasound technology relevant to common point-of-care ultrasound applications.

Target Audience

Providers in any practice setting looking to incorporate point of care ultrasound into patient care in any acute care setting (Physicians, NP, PA, RN, trainees).

Module Learning Objectives
  1. Describe the process of generating an ultrasound image.
  2. Recognize common ultrasound machine modes and functionality.
  3. Differentiate the 3 commonly used ultrasound transducers.
  4. Appreciate the basic operations and pitfalls of the ultrasound machine.
  5. Understand conventional probe orientations and imaging planes
  6. Recognize common artifacts.

More and more hospitalists are now using point-of-care ultrasound as a bedside tool in the care of acutely ill patients, and the Society of Hospital Medicine is expanding its educational offerings to improve hospitalists’ point-of-care ultrasound skills.
