Maryland Chapter Meeting: May 1, 2024 - Care of the Hospitalized Incarcerated Patient
At almost 2.1 million, the U.S. has one of the highest populations of incarcerated patients in the world. Similar to the overall population, incarcerated patients are aging and represent a multitude of medical problems. The hospital is a special environment for this population, as many regulations require continuous shackling during hospitalization. In this activity, we hope to describe the multiple poor outcomes hospitalized incarcerated patients are at an increased risk of facing; outline ways to improve care when admitting patients from a correctional facility, treating them in the hospital, and discharging incarcerated patients to the next level of care; and describe how to provide ethical and humane care to hospitalized incarcerated patients.
